Our Mission

What Nashville Leaders Say About Literacy

“Find what your passion is. If you find what your passion is; it may be sports or racing or whatever. That’s what you go to first. If you love racing or you love sports, then get you a book on sports. Because what it will do, it will open your eyes and then open up the opportunities and realizing that there’s a big world out there. Coming from an area where you may feel as if you are really hampered by the community that you live in, but when it comes to literacy and being able to read and being able to enhance your ability to understand and learn, it will take you further than you ever imagined.”

Director Chief William Swann

Nashville Metro Fire Department

“A.I. is going to be the future of what we do. But you can’t let it rob you of the experience of comprehending everything or taking away the reading of certain things. You’ve got to be able to still read to learn.”

Lelan Statom

NewsChannel5 Meteorologist

“At the end of the day, news, information and learning really hasn’t changed; it’s just the way we consume it has changed. But man, you’ve got to be able to read to do anything. I played for a really legendary coach in Tennessee named Johnny Majors and he had a saying that he would say all the time: “Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance,” and I still remember that. [And] you treat people the way you expect to be treated and you don’t really expect a good outcome if you haven’t put the work in to accomplish that outcome.”

Bubba Miller

NFL Player, retired.
